It's interesting that “Rewriting” implies more the relationship of Einstein to Newton than an Extended Synthesis. The historian William Provine has also described the Synthesis as a constriction – while combining various biological subfields, the architects also rejected several alternative theories of evolution. "The Extended Synthesis: Something Old, Something New." Evolution: Education and Outreach 4, no. There are now calls for an extended synthesis but I can't comment on their merits. In the new book entitled "Evolution, the Extended Synthesis" published by MIT, Massimo Pigliucci and Gerd B Műller, along with the other Altenberg 16, clearly details why Modern Synthesis is in a crisis. I would like first to offer a few cautionary notes and then briefly to situate the conversation within the context of more recent theoretical work that is part of a new “extended synthesis” of evolutionary thought(1). Conversely the importance of epigenetics must be a serious challenge to the understanding of evolution itself. In real life, the meeting discussed the possibilities for an “Extended Synthesis” in evolutionary biology which incorporates development, evolvability, complexity theory, etc. Extended, modeled, synthesized, and/or misled or dictated by the 1940s MS of neo-Darwinism past; especially in our concurrent pop-science or “evolutionary biology” lexicon and literature of today and beyond, worldwide! See my comments below about Brooks's promotion of Darwinism as the "future of biology.
